Model Kramer

Eight-panel

Pieter (Piet) Lodewijk Kramer was one of the key architects of the Amsterdam School. He is best known for his distinctive buildings and numerous bridges. More than once, he also designed furniture, monuments, and even postage stamps. He saw himself more as an artist than an architect. Piet drew much inspiration from Eastern Sufism and nature. His style is characterised by sculptural façades filled with ladder windows. Our eight-panel door echoes Kramer’s style and proudly bears his name.

Expressive and imaginative forms

The Amsterdam School is characterised by expressive and imaginative forms and is closely related to expressionism. It is seen as a response to the rational work of Berlage. An iconic building designed by Kramer is the Bijenkorf in The Hague. There, his use of ladder windows is clearly visible. These windows are often topped with steep roofs and occasionally turrets. While the building appears quite grand, it maintains a human scale. It is known as the “Palace of Joyful Living” and is one of Piet’s masterpieces.
