Model Sullivan

Louis Henry Sullivan was an American architect who believed in the philosophy of form follows function. Sullivan studied at the Chicago School of Architecture and was one of the pioneers in using steel frames in high-rise buildings. As the designer of the Wainwright Building in St. Louis, Missouri, he gained widespread recognition. This building is known as one of the world’s first aesthetic skyscrapers. Later in his career, Sullivan became the mentor of perhaps the most famous American architect ever, Frank Lloyd Wright.

Form follows function

Sullivan designed buildings that served their purpose. His way of thinking resulted in buildings reaching new heights, creating more living space that could be optimally utilised. Famous buildings designed by Sullivan include the Chicago Stock Exchange Building, the Wainwright Building (as mentioned earlier), and the Guaranty Building in Buffalo. These buildings were highly unconventional in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and helped pave the way for modernism in America.
