Willem Heyligers on Valley Amsterdam-Zuid

One of the remarkable projects we are currently involved in is Valley in Amsterdam-Zuid, developed by MVRDV, the world-renowned architecture firm from Rotterdam. We asked architect Willem Heyligers of HEYLIGERS d+p, who is collaborating with MVRDV on this project, to share his view on this unique development.
High-end rental homes
“For the Valley project, our office was approached by the new owner, the RJB Group, to design parts of the interior,” explains Heyligers. “This was necessary because the residences in the original design were aimed at a different target group. Today, they are luxury rental homes in the higher segment, which required substantial changes to the layouts—while construction was already underway. Challenging, of course, but it worked out well in cooperation with BCVA.”
Steel doors by De Rooy
Heyligers: “To meet the high-quality standards of this luxury building, we turned to De Rooy Metaaldesign for the steel doors. We were particularly impressed by the engineering of the pivot doors. Since construction had already started, the doors needed to be anchored in the floors without major modifications to the concrete. Fortunately, De Rooy’s steel doors posed no problem in that regard. Every residence will feature at least one De Rooy steel door—some even two or more.”
“One of De Rooy’s strengths is their collaboration with the FritsJurgens technical pivot solutions. But the precise detailing and seamless welding are just as remarkable. This is an ideal solution for existing buildings, and we will definitely apply it in other projects as well.”
Valley – A remarkable project
“This building will become iconic—a green valley in the middle of Amsterdam’s stone towers. It will surely be a talking point. The building will house retail, office spaces, and from the 8th floor upwards, residential units. These residences will vary greatly in size, and every one of them will feature a steel door by De Rooy. Valley will be a magnificent collaboration between MVRDV and HEYLIGERS design + projects.”
