Unique handles designed by Osiris Hertman

We recently started a collaboration with top designer Osiris Hertman. He designed a unique set of handles for a pair of steel doors, which we brought to life. Read more about his inspiration and what he thought of our collaboration.
Symmetrical handles
“For the design of these doors and their distinctive handles, I was inspired by the symmetrical handles on antique Chinese cabinets. These recognisable steel or copper elements dominate the centre of the red wood,” explains the designer. Osiris Hertman likes to create designs that are visually clear and easy to understand. “Handles represent access to something valuable,” he says. “That’s why it’s important to walk through doors in your home that have been crafted with care.”
“People often underestimate the importance of doors. But you look at them every day — just like your furniture. Doors are an essential part of any interior.”
Working with
De Rooy
Hertman values craftsmanship in his work. Key themes in his designs include using honest materials and incorporating detailed shapes that require expert execution.
“That’s what I enjoy about working with De Rooy — their artisanal approach,” he says. “Their problem-solving skills and how they combine functionality with custom-made detail is impressive.” Hertman was struck by how perfectly the steel for the handles was formed into a round shape. “Finishing steel in such a clean curve is no easy task,” he admits.
Doors are
essential
“While working on the interior design of that villa, I spontaneously came into contact with De Rooy. People often overlook doors, but you face them every day. That’s why I advise clients to allocate a budget for custom doors during renovations. They’re a vital part of the interior.” This led Hertman to design these distinctive handles. The predecessor to this design was a stainless steel handle developed for wooden sliding doors.
‘Doors are the
jewels of your home’
With years of experience designing products for leading brands — including handmade jewellery for Buddha to Buddha — Osiris Hertman has developed a keen sense for clear and expressive design. He notes that doors are “like jewellery for your home.”
The steel doors and handles were finished with a fine texture powder coating, or as the designer puts it, “baked in an Old Amsterdam finish.” This gives the steel an orange peel texture. Where others might opt for standard paint, Osiris prefers powder coating — it’s far more durable and ensures the product stays beautiful over time.
An inspiring
collaboration
“I was inspired by the symmetrical handles on antique Chinese cabinets,” says Hertman. We find it inspiring to work with Osiris Hertman. His perspective opens new doors for us in the world of design.
