Hoeshmand Mahmoed: steel doors with two faces

Video poster

Two double steel doors with the same design, yet with a completely different appearance. For The Loft by Hoeshmand, HMVD Architecten’s inspiring design space during The Art of Living in Rosmalen, we created a distinctive door design in which steel, wood and glass come together. In this article, we speak to Hoeshmand Mahmoed about the design, the collaboration and the vision behind these steel doors.

Architecture that brings calm and clarity

Hoeshmand Mahmoed is an architect and the owner of HMVD Architecten. His work is guided by a clear conviction: true beauty lies in enduring simplicity. Whether it is a home or a working environment, his designs bring calm and clarity. No excess, no haste, but a focus on light, space, materials and essence. ‘Every design is created by listening, observing and reducing it to its essence,’ says Hoeshmand. ‘When everything is right, you feel it immediately.’

One family, two doors

At the heart of The Loft by Hoeshmand are two double steel pivot doors with FritsJurgens pivot system. At first glance, they appear identical, but look a little closer and you see that each door has its own function and character. Hoeshmand explains: ‘We used two sets of double pivot doors with exactly the same design. Only the panel infill, a combination of wood and glass, was informed by the space behind the door.’

For the bedroom, more wood and less glass were chosen. This creates privacy and calm. For the bathroom, by contrast, more glass was used, so that the freestanding bath and natural stone remain visible. The ribbed glass creates a refined balance between openness and shelter. ‘That is what makes it interesting,’ says Hoeshmand. ‘Both doors have exactly the same design. The panel infill is what makes them different. One family, two doors.’

The Eclipse by Hoeshmand

The design was given the name The Eclipse. Hoeshmand explains: ‘Eclipse refers to an obscuration, as in a solar or lunar eclipse: the moment when something temporarily disappears behind something else. In design and architecture, it represents mystery; the contrast between light and dark. Silence and timeless perfection. For these doors, the name feels especially fitting because of the rounded shapes, the dark appearance and the sense of transition into another world or space.’

Bog Oak and Walnut

The wooden panel infill was created by Wonderwall Studios. The dark side of the doors is finished in Bog Oak: oak that has lain in peat soil for hundreds or even thousands of years. Under the influence of minerals and acids, the wood develops its deep, dark tones and distinctive appearance. The lighter side is finished in Walnut, a wood species with warm brown tones, dark accents and a lively grain structure.

Together with steel and glass, this creates a layered design in which each side has its own atmosphere. Hoeshmand says: ‘Luxury encompasses more than aesthetics alone. The moment you grasp the handle or gently run your hand over the wooden panels, you feel the luxury of these two doors.’

An excellent collaboration

The collaboration with HMVD Architecten and Wonderwall Studios is one in which architecture, material and craftsmanship enhance one another. Hoeshmand looks back on the process positively: ‘What I like most about working with De Rooy is the communication. Always refined and professional.’ That clear coordination was important in order to realise the design down to the finest detail. From the panel layout to the choice of materials, every decision had to contribute to the experience of the loft. The result is both a design and a collaboration of which we are truly proud.
